730,550. Soil stabilizing. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. April 25, 1952 [April 27, 1951], No. 10448/52. Class 68(1). Traffic-bearing surfaces are rendered substantially free from mud by applying to, or dispersing in, the surface soil an at least sparingly water-soluble high molecular weight linear polymer or copolymer in an amount sufficient to induce aggregation of the mudforming particles and thereafter compressing the treated surface. 0.005-2 per cent by weight of polymer or copolymer having a molecular weight of at least 10,000 may be used. Examples of suitable polymers and copolymers include high molecular weight polyvinic acrylic acids ; methacrylic acids ; co-polymers thereof with other monomers such as styrene, α-methyl - styrene, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, butadiene, alkyl acrylates, alkyl methacylates, vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, alkyl malcatis and alkyl fumaratis ; acrylamide; methacrylamide ; alkali metal, amine and ammonium salts of acrylic or methacrylic acids ; beta-aminoethyl acrylate; beta-methylaminoethyl methacrylate; beta-methyl aminoethyl acrylate; beta-methyl aminoethyl methacrylate; N-N-dimethyl beta-aminoethyl methacrylate ; and N-alkyl substituted acrylamides and methacrylamides ; malcic acid ; malcic anhydride ; malcamic acid ; malcic amide ; di (beta-aminoethyl) malcate ; di (methylaminoethyl) malcate ; di (N, N-dimethyl betaaminoethyl) malcate ; copolymers of chloromalcic and citraconic acids ; polyvinyl alcohol sulphored polystyrene ; polyvinyl pyridine chydrolised polyacrylonitrile, polyalkyl acrylates, polyalkyl methacrylates; polyvinyl acetate, and copolymers of vinyl esters, acrylic esters and acrylic nitriles with styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, alpha-methylstyrene, vinyldiphenyl, isopropenyl-diphenyl and vinyl flouride. The polymer or copolymer may be allowed to penetrate the ploughed surface, or may be mixed therewith by a cultivating machine ; after 1-5 hours, the soil is then worked by ploughing, discing or raking; and the treated soil is finally compressed e.g. by rolling.
