Abstract

In handbrake mechanism of the kind in which a flexible or articulated tension element connects a handbrake lever with a guide member mounted on a support associated with or carrying the lever pivot, the arrangement being such that the line of action of the tension elements moves progressively nearer the pivot to increase the leverage up to a maximum value when the tension element abuts the pivot, additional guide means is provided for the tension element on the handbrake lever such that the tension element extends in a curved path between its anchorage on the handbrake lever and the guide member. A formula equating the integral of the work done in moving the handbrake lever with a substantially constant force with the integral of the work done by the tension element in overcoming elastic deformation of the brake linkage after engagement of the brake shoes is given as a basis for calculating the form of the curved path. In the embodiment shown, this curved path is determined approximately by two, preferably adjustable, abutments 5 on the handbrake lever 1 which are suitably located in relation to the anchorage point 3 of chain 2 on the lever and an anchorage 7 on a guide lever 8 pivoted at 11 to a support 12 which carries the handbrake lever pivot shaft 4, such that after engagement of the brake shoes the leverage produced increases substantially linearly with travel of the handbrake lever until the chain engages the pivot shaft 4, which corresponds to maximum leverage. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the tension element is a cable which passes through a guide member (10) against which a sheath (9), through which the cable passes to the brake-applying mechanism, abuts, while the additional guide means is a member (13) provided with a curved guide (6) pivoted to the handbrake lever at (14), the member (13) being adjustable by a screw (15) on the handbrake lever to vary the distance between the free end of the guide (6) and the pivot shaft (4).
