Abstract

[Also in Division B3] An indexing mechanism comprises toothed wheels 3 on a driven shaft 2, cylinders 4 radially mounted in a body 1 around the wheels 3, and operating pins 5 located in the cylinders 4 and having wedge-shaped ends which are adapted to be moved sequentially into and out of engagement with the toothed wheels causing stepped angular rotation thereof. Control mechanism comprises a plurality of nozzles 8, one corresponding to each cylinder 4, cooperating with openings formed in a drum 6 secured to the shaft 2. Fluid under pressure is fed to the nozzles 8 and to valves associated with the cylinders 4, the arrangement being such that when one of the nozzles 8 is in coincidence with an opening in drum 6, a driving impulse is transmitted to the appropriate valve to cause a pin 5 to engage the toothed wheel 3 and rotate the wheel one step. As the drum 6 rotates, it causes the opening to move out of coincidence with the nozzle 8 whereby a further impulse is transmitted to the valve to cause the pin 5 to disengage from the toothed wheel. As shown, two toothed wheels 3 are provided, and a second system of nozzles (not shown) is provided for counting either the strokes of each cylinder or the separate movements of the shaft. The valves in the control system can be formed by pneumatic or hydraulic motors, electromagnets or flexible membranes.
