Abstract
1,101,278. Cooling discharge tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 25 Nov., 1965 [28 Nov., 1964], No. 50161/65. Heading HID. In an arrangement for cooling a discharge tube electrode 2, which forms part of the tube wall, and has on its outer surface a number of parallel grooves 3 surrounded by a cylindrical jacket 4, coolant is both supplied and conducted away near the closed end of the electrode, and a coolant distributing body 7 is provided so that some of the grooves 3 are traversed by the forward flow, and some by the return flow, of coolant. The grooves may extend axially, but as shown, external anode 2 is formed with forty-eight parallel helical grooves which open into a space above distributing body 7, which body is formed with four ridges 10 contacting the closed end 6 of anode 2, so that alternate groups of six grooves communicate with coolant inlet 8, while the ridges 10 provide a barrier between the remaining grooves and inlet 8, these grooves communicating with coolant outlet 17 via recesses in ridges 10. Alternatively, fewer grooves may be used for the return flow than for the forward flow of the coolant which may be liquid or gas.
