Abstract

1,100,775. Valves. SHELL-MEX & B.P. Ltd. 5 July, 1966, No. 30067/66. Heading F2V. [Also in Divisions A4, B8, F1, F4 and G1] The flow of fluent material into or out of a container through a valve &c. is controlled by a device responsive to the amount of fluent material in the container, the valve &c. being connected to the amount-responsive device by a radio link including a transmitter and a receiver. The fluent material may be a liquid, a powder or gas. For a liquid or powder, the amount in the container may be indicated by the level of the liquid or powder. The levelindicating device may be a capacitance probe, a float, resistor or thermistor probe, or a photoelectric transducer. For a gas, the amount may be indicated by the pressure of the gas in the container, or by means responsive to the concentration of the gas in the container. In one form, as shown, an oil tanker for delivering fuel oil to a storage tank has a solenoid-operated valve in its delivery pipe. The tanker carries a U.H.F. radio receiver which, when it receives a signal, acts through a relay to close a circuit and open the solenoid valve. When the tanker driver puts the delivery pipe into the filling hole of the storage tank, he at the same time places a small U.H.F. radio transmitter on the top of the storage tank. The radio transmitter has at its base a capacitance probe which is passed through a second hole in the top of the tank. Placing the transmitter upon the tank closes a switch to make a circuit so that the transmitter operates. The signal emitted by the transmitter is picked up by the receiver upon the oil tanker, and the solenoid valve in the delivery pipe is opened. Fuel oil is delivered into the storage tank until its level rises to touch a capacitance probe on the base of the U.H.F. transmitter. The transmitter is automatically switched-off, and stops giving a signal. Accordingly, the receiver upon the oil tanker opens its relay switch, to shut the solenoid-operated valve. As modifications, the system may contain an alarm, such as a bell or a lamp, to indicate when the valve &c. has been shut. The transmitter may have a hand-operated override control switch. Other switches on the transmitter may effect further control functions, e.g. actuation of a hose rewind mechanism.
