Abstract
In a two-stage top-blowing process for the production of low-phosphorus steel in a rotary converter the first stage of blowing is commenced with the converter stationary in a vertical position, rotation being commenced part way through that stage. The bath is then deslagged, this operation being carried out in the case of the production of high carbon steel when the carbon content of the bath is 0.2%-0.7% above that finally required, after which the converter is rotated throughout the second stage of blowing. To maintain the desired final carbon content the slag is then stiffened by a relatively slight movement of the vessel e.g. rotation at not more than 10 r.p.m. with the axis inclined to the vertical, without injection of oxygen, to bring about a slight reaction of the carbon of the bath with the slag oxides.
