Abstract
Scrap or solid or liq. pig-iron is treated in a furnace rotatable about its long axis, with opt. introduction of a fuel, e.g. coke and/or slag-formers, by (1) correctly positioning oxidant-gas nozzles by appropriately rotating furnaces, and fusing the contents, and (2) refining by rotating the furnace so as to position the nozzles appropriately for ther refining operation, whether it be by blowing from the top, bottom or side. For fusion, the furnace may be horizontal. The gas may be industrially pure oxygen, and the nozzle may be just below the metal bath. Fusing and refining performed in same appts., therefore cheap.
