Abstract

The fire resistance of a solid body of synthetic resin formed by the polymerization of an unsaturated resin in a non-aqueous liquid condition is increased by the incorporation of dry sodium bicarbonate or borax in the resin before it hardens. The preferred resin is an unsaturated polyester resin. In an example are used methyl ethyl ketone peroxide as catalyst and cobalt naphthenate as accelerator, sodium bicarbonate being sprinkled over the resin while still soft and rolled in. Alternatively the bicarbonate may be mixed with the liquid resin before the catalyst and accelerator are introduced. In another example the bicarbonate is mixed with a powdered filler, e.g. calcium carbonate, and the mixture stirred into the resin before placing in a mould.
