Abstract

1,100,403. Welding by fusion; making valve seats. MIRRLEES NATIONAL Ltd. 8 March, 1966 [17 March, 1965], No. 11224/65. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F1] In an internal combustion engine valve of the caged type, the valve seat 16 is electron beam welded to the body 10 of the cage and adjacent annular grooves 15a, 16a in the seat 16 and body 10 conjointly form a cooling channel. The junction faces between the seat 16 and the body 10 may be flat and in the same or different planes, one may be planar and the other cylindrical or both may be of mating zig-zig confirmation (Fig. 4, not shown). The body 10 is of alloy steel and the seat 16 is of alloy steel or a cobalt based alloy. In the former case the seat 16 is faced with a cobalt based alloy prior to or after welding. In the latter case a nickel shim is interposed between the junction faces and is fused by the electron beam.
