Abstract

A fine-grinding or polishing element for the surface finishing or workpieces comprises a number of rod-shaped or flake-shaped particles of relatively hard material having a diameter or thickness of less than 50m and a ratio of length to diameter or thickness of at least 10:1, embedded over substantially their entire length in a less hard material to form a solid body therewith. The particles may be whiskers of Fe, Al2O3 or Fe2O3, nitrated whiskers or whiskers of tungsten carbide, molybdenum carbide or titanium carbide. Alternatively the particles may be crystals with anisotropic resistance or hardness properties, e.g. flake-shaped particles of graphite or MoS2; provided they are orientated with their lattice slip planes at right angles to the grinding or polishing plane. The binder may be a plastic, e.g. epoxy resin or polyester resin. In making an element, particles, metallized if necessary to render them magnetizable, are orientated by a magnetic field so that they are parallel to each other and at right angles to the intended grinding or polishing plane and a binder added in liquid or vapour phase. Alternatively the magnetic field may be applied to a mixture of particles and liquid binder. To increase the concentration of particles pressure may be applied transversely before the binder has set.
