Abstract

The growth of micro-organisms in aqueous process streams is controlled by the continuous addition thereto of an N-monochloro- or N,N-dichloro-sulphamate prepared in situ in the stream to be treated by mixing solutions of the corresponding sulphamate and a hypochlorite and allowing them to react therein. According to the proportions of the reagents used, the resulting solution contains N-monochlorosulphamate together with varying proportions of N,N-dichlorosulphamate. A suitable apparatus automatically controlled by the oxidation potential is described. Aqueous process streams which may suitably be treated include paper coating compositions containing starch or casein, raw water supplies, industrial wastes and sewage treatment plant effluents. missing page 270
