Abstract

Ethylene is obtained by thermal cracking of hydrocarbons in a pyrolysis tube at 750-850 DEG C. followed by cooling to below 400 DEG C. in a quench boiler in which steam is injected tangentially into the member connecting the tube to the boiler. The member may be conical or partly cylindrical and partly conical or in a preferred embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) is wholly cylindrical and steam is also injected upwardly adjacent to the cracking tube, and baffles deflect this steam laterally. The steam injected may be at 110-400 DEG C. in an amount of 0.02-1 part per part by weight of dry cracked gas and at a velocity of 10-300 m./sec.
