Abstract

In the production of gaseous olefins by pyrolysis of gaseous or vaporizable hydrocarbons at above 750 DEG C. followed by indirect cooling in a waste heat boiler to below 400 DEG C. the member connecting the pyrolysis tube to the wider boiler contains a displacement member to avoid the velocity of the gas falling below the velocity of entry into the cooling tubes. The displacement member contains passages guiding the gas to the cooling tubes and may be streamlined as shown in Fig. 1 or may extend over the whole width of the connecting member (Fig. 2, not shown). <PICT:1095727/C4-C5/1>
