Abstract

<FORM:1099686/C6-C7/1> Fouling of an immersed structure e.g. a ship's hull made of steel, wood or glass fibre reinforced synhetic resin, is prevented by in situ electrolytic generation of chlorine from sea water or brackish water, using anodes embedded in the structure so as to be flush with the surface thereof and insulated therefrom. The anodes may be made of platinum or graphite or preferably platinum or other noble metal films on a titanium core. The anodes may be located in a pattern on the structure which may also be used as the cathode. As shown in the Figure a ship's hull 1 is apertured to receive an anode assembly 2 screwed in to a hull boss 3 welded to the hull. The hull is insulated from an anode 4 by filling 5 and acts as the cathode. A lead 8 passes through gland 7 and a terminal 9 is connected to rod 11 of the anode. The body is closed by a threaded cap 17 and a gasket 18.
