Abstract
In an electrolytic cell for the production of hypochlorite by electrolysis of sea water which flows continuously through the cell, to avoid anodic corrosion of metal work adjacent the cell due to any earth return leakage current flow via such metal work and the sea water, means are provided to bias the positive terminal of the cell at such a negative potential relative to an earthed sacrificial or a non-corrodible anode e.g. of platinised titanium that the metal work is always cathodic with respect to the sea water. The anti-corrosion anode maybe earthed by immersion in sea water outside the flow path through the cell and a limiting resistor may be connected between it and the biasing means. The cell may be incorporated in a cooling supply system using sea water so that at least a part of the sea water is treated and admixed with the remaining coolant supply to provide a sufficient hypochlorite content to prevent infestation of the cooling system by marine organisms. Alternatively the cell may be used to treat sea water containing sewage particles prior to final discharge into the sea.
