Abstract

An elastic thread of rubber is made more resistant to the effects of boiling water and wear by providing an adhering coating of a cured polyurethane composition. The coating may be applied by providing a polyurethane prepolymer which is coated on to the thread and then cross-linked by a conventional curing agent. The prepolymer may be a polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate or a compound containing terminal groups having an active hydrogen atom. Alternatively, the prepolymer and the cross-linking agent are mixed and immediately applied to the thread. In a variant of this method an interface is formed between prepolymer and cross-linking agent and the thread is passed through the interface. The thread can also be coated with a polyurethane latex which is subsequently dried to effect curing thereof.
