Abstract

An electrolytic bath, in particular a nickel plating bath, comprises from 5 to 600 mg per litre of electrolyte of at least one condensation product of naphtho-1, 8-sultone with an organic compound containing per molecule at least one readily substituted hydrogen atom and at least one five-membered heterocyclic ring containing at least one nitrogen atom. The electrolyte may comprise nickel sulphate, sulphamate, fluoborate or chloride, boric acid, a stabilizer such as saccharin, p-toluene sulphonamide, hexamine or cyanuric acid, a brightener such as an alcohol or an unsaturated aldehyde, a voltage lowering agent such as lauryl sulphate and at least one of the said condensation products. The bath may also contain as a brightener the reaction product of equimolar amounts of bis-hydroxyethyl ether butyne diol and naphtho-1, 8-sultone. Specified heterocyclic compounds are indolenine, sodium b -isonitroso indole, phthalocyanine, 1, 5-dimethyl imidazole, succinimide, porphine or a porphyrine (an alkyl substituted porphine).ALSO:Condensation products of naphtho-1,8-sultone with an organic compound containing per molecule at least one readily substituted hydrogen atom and at least one five-membered heterocyclic ring containing at least one nitrogen atom may be obtained by reacting the sultone and heterocyclic derivative together in the proportions of one mol. of sultone for each available nitrogen atom in the or each heterocyclic ring in an aqueous medium at a pH of 3.5-4.0 and heating at a temperature of 85 DEG C. and then cooling. Specified heterocyclic derivatives are indolenine, sodium b -isonitroso indole, phthalocyanine, 1,5-dimethyl imidazole, succinimide, porphine or a porphyrine (as alkyl substituted porphine).
