Abstract

1 : 3 : 5-triazine-2 : 4 : 6-trimercaptoalkylene sulphonic acid or their water-soluble salts where the alkylene group may be methylene, ethylene, propylene, hydroxypropylene, or chloropropylene are obtained by converting cyanuric chloride into trimercaptocyanuric acid and reacting an alkali metal salt thereof with either an appropriate organic halosulphonic acid such as 2-bromoethane-1-sulphonic acid, 3-bromopropane-1-sulphonic acid, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropane-1-sulphonic acid or their alkali metal salts, or sultones such as propanesultone or butanesultone, followed by conversion into the corresponding sulphonic acids or their salts. 5- or 6-membered cyclic compounds which contain at least twice the grouping: <FORM:0847841/IV(b)/1> where R is an aliphatic C1 to C6 hydrocarbon radical and contain at least two nitrogen atoms such as the 2 : 5-bis-(mercaptopropane-11-sulphonic acid) derivatives of 1 : 3 : 4-thiadiazole, 1 : 3 : 4-oxadiazole, and 1 : 3 : 4-triazole, and 1 : 3 : 4-thiadiazole-2 : 5-bis-(mercapto - 21 - hydroxypropane-11-sulphonic acid) are similarly produced by reaction with sultones or organic halosulphonic acids of appropriate heterocyclic compounds in which the ring carbon atoms are substituted by chlorine or mercapto groups respectively. Compounds NH = C (SR1SO3H)-NH-R-NH-C-(SR1SO3H) = NH and salts thereof are formed by reaction of methylene-, ethylene-, hexamethylene-, or phenylene-dithiourea with propane- or butane-sultone or the sodium salts of haloalkanesulphonic acids. Polybasic S-alkanesulphonic acids similarly may be derived from polythioureas. Specifications 806,403 and 815,908 also are referred to.
