Abstract

The Specification comprises heparyl substituted ureas having the general formula:- <FORM:0867064/IV (a)/1> in which R represents a heparyl residue and R1 is an alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl group and X is an integer from 1 to 4. These compounds may be made from heparamine (N-desulpho heparin) which is itself made from heparin by the method described in Specification 863,235, by reacting it with an iso-cyanate of general formula R1-N= C=O where R1 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group. Specifie products are N-heparyl-N1-n-butyl-urea; N-heparyl-N1-phenyl-urea; N-heparyl-N1-a -naphthyl urea and their alkali metal salts. Reaction may be effected in an aqueous medium, optionally in the presence of an ammonium or alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate, or in a solvent such as iso-propanol. The substituted urea may be isolated by precipitation with a water miscible solvent in which it is insoluble, such as methanol, ethanol, acetone or dioxan. Alternatively it can be purified by transformation into a quaternary ammonium salt by means of Hyamine 1622, Hyamine 2389, Cequartyl BE, Zephyrol, or an alkyl-dilauryl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride, and recovered by means of an alkali metal salt of a lower fatty acid in aqueous solution such as sodium acetate.
