Abstract

1,099,142. Seals. GEORGE ANGUS & CO. Ltd. May 25, 1965 [May 27, 1964; Jan. 7, 1965], Nos. 21866/64 and 719/65. Heading F2B. A ball and socket joint is sealed by a gaiter 11 of resiliently deformable micro-cellular material having both open and closed cells which fit tightly on the ball stem 7 and sealingly engages the surface of the socket 1 around the mouth 8 through which the stem projects. The ball 6 is located between a pair of spring- loaded spherically-recessed seats 2 and 3. The gaiter 11 of micro-cellular, resilient polyurethane is clamped between the socket 1 and a link 9 by a nut 10 on the stem end 7a and is sufficiently flexible to maintain sealing whilst permitting oscillation or rotation of the stem 7. A metal washer 12, which may be bonded to the gaiter, is interposed between the outer end face of the gaiter and the link 9 and the inner end face of the gaiter is concave to fit around the cylindrical surface of the socket 1. The end faces of the gaiter have the cellular structure exposed whilst the outer cylindrical wall is closed, as by a moulding skin of the material. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), two gaiters of conically dished form in their free state are used.
