Abstract
1,098,994. Buoyant cables. HOLLANDSCHE DRAAD-EN KABELFABRIEK N.V. June 23, 1965 [Dec. 16, 1964], No. 26646/65. Heading H1A. The Specification describes a floating cable to be towed behind a ship for the detection of magnetic mines. The hauling forces lead to twisting of the cable and the cable described is so designed as not to be subject to this twist. The cable consists of four leads each having a right-handed twist and each having the following construction. Around central cylinders of cork are wound layers of adhesive tape and on this are seventy-six bundles of aluminium wires, each bundle having seven wires. Around these conductors is a layer of filling paste and a foil of synthetic plastic. A further layer of conductors with a left hand lay is then applied and a further layer of a sealing paste and a synthetic foil. The lead is completed by a layer of rubber and one of polychloropropylene. The Specification explains that the ratio of the lays of the leads and of the, conductors composing the leads should be between 0À8 and 1À5 times the ratio of the area of this centre line circle of the cable and of the area of the centre line circle of the conductors in each of the leads. Where there is more than one layer of conductors in a lead the average lay and average conductor area is considered.
