Abstract
A p-alkoxy-phenyl alkylene carboxylic acid of general formula <FORM:1098349/C2/1> in which n is 1, 2 or 3 and R is a C1-C4 alkyl radical is prepared by subjecting a p-alkoxyphenylalkylene thiomide of general formula <FORM:1098349/C2/2> in which A represents the remainder of a heterocyclic ring containing the nitrogen atom, to alkaline hydrolysis and then acidification. The heterocyclic ring may be, for example, a morpholino, piperidino or piperazino group. The starting materials may be prepared by alkylating a phenol, treating the alkyl phenol so obtained with acetic anhydride (when a p-alkoxy-phenyl acetic acid is required) and treating the acetyl compound with sulphur and the appropriate cyclic amine. Examples are given of the preparation of (a) p-ethoxy-phenyl acetic acid from N-[p-ethoxy-phenylthioacetyl]-morpholine which is prepared from phenol as described above and (b) p-ethoxy-phenyl-propionic acid from N-[p-ethoxy-phenylthio-propionyl] morpholine which is prepared by an analogous process to that described above.
