Abstract

1,098,337. Sewing machines. SINGER CO. Nov. 10, 1966, No. 50351/66. Heading DIG. [Also in Division E2] A cover is connected to the bracket arm lid of a sewing machine by a hinge comprising a flange on the cover, a bracket on the lid pivotally supporting the flange, pressure-receiving means on the flange, and spring means applying pressure to the pressure-receiving means, whereby torque is applied in one direction or the other to the flange when the cover is in the closed or open position for retaining the cover in said position. The lid 16 of a bracket arm 10 is formed with an aperture 18 which gives access to a pattern cam 12 and is closed by a cover 20. A flange 22 depending from cover 20 passes through an aperture 25 in lid 16 and is hinged at 24 to a bracket 26 secured by screws 28 to lid 16. A leaf spring 32 is clamped at one end between lid 16 and bracket 26, and bears at its other end upon an abutment 30 on flange 22. When cover 20 is closed, abutment 30 is to the left of pivot 24 whereby spring 32 biases flange 22 counterclockwise to hold cover 20 closed. When cover 20 is open, a notch 23 in flange 22 engages over the rear wall of bracket arm 10, and abutment 30 is to the right of pivot 24, whereby flange 22 is biased clockwise to hold cover 20 open.
