Abstract
1,097,859. Packaging. L. WIKING. April 12, 1966 [April 23, 1965], No. 15915/66. Heading B8C. Apparatus for opening a package having a heat-sensitive foil wrapper comprises suction members 24 which grip the wrapper and stretch it as they are swung outwards and heating devices 21, 28 to reduce its tear resistance. A package 29 wrapped in a thermoplastics foil 30 is positioned by a conveyer 1 under the apparatus which is mounted on a pair of beams 2. A rod 19 is adjustably positioned for each size of package so that a pin 22 is just clear of the package. The rod carries a pair of diagonally extending heater bars 21, the positions of rods 27 on bars 18 are adjusted so that fan heaters 28 are directed towards the upper corners of the package. Piston and cylinder means 9, 23 carrying the suction cups 24 are positioned as shown in Fig. 1. The foil 30 is stretched and contacts the pin 22 which punctures it. The cylinders 9 are swung outwards, bringing the foil into contact with the heated edge of the bars 21, tearing it along the package diagonals. The flaps so formed are raised by the suction cups 24 and gripped by pivoted arms 25 against the cup. Upon further outward movement of the cylinders 9, the piston rods 23 are extended to fold the flaps outward and the heaters 28 displaced downwards along the vertical edges of the package resulting in the tearing of the foil along the said edges.
