Abstract

Detergent compositions comprise at least one purified polyethylene glycol alkylthioether, RS(CH2.CH2.O)nH, wherein R is C2- 18 alkyl, and n is an integer which may vary from 1 to 14, together with a carrier or diluent, the purified polyethylene glycol alkylthioether having not more than 0.5 part per 1000 of iron. The compositions may be in the form of creams or lotions.ALSO:A tert.-dodecyl mercaptan-ethylene oxide condensate, C12H25S(CH2.CH2.O)12H, is prepared by reacting 12 mols. of ethylene oxide with 1 mol. of tert.-dodecyl mercaptan at 140-160 DEG C. in the presence of aq. Na2CO3 as catalyst. The Specification refers generally to compounds of the formula RS(CH2CH2O)nH where R is an alkyl radical, preferably branched, of 2 to 18 carbon atoms, and n is up to 14, for use in medicaments. They may be purified by distillation, or treatment with wood charcoal or infusorial earth.ALSO:A medicament for the treatment of acne, seborrhea and seborrheic dermatitis comprises at least one purified polyethylene glycol alkylthioether of the formula R-S(CH2.CH2O)nH in which R is a C2-18 alkyl radical and n is an integer which may vary from 1 to 14 and a carrier or diluent, the purified polyethylene glycol alkyl thioether having not more than 0.5 part per 1000 of iron. The medicament may be in the form of a cream or lotion.
