Abstract

[Also in Divisions B7 and H4] An automobile windshield comprising two sheets of glass 11, 12, and an interlayer of thermoplastic material 13, e.g. polyvinyl butyral, bonded together to provide a composite structure is characterized in that the interlayer 13 has a coloured band 14 applied to one of its surfaces to provide a shaded area across the upper portion of the windshield, and antenna wires 16 are located between the glass sheets and spaced from the surface of the interlayer having the coloured band, the wires 16 being disposed in the shaded area of the windshield. In one embodiment, Fig. 6, the interlayer 13 comprises a sheet 15 of clear material to the upper portion of which the wires 16 are secured in spaced parallel relationship with one end portion of each wire projecting beyond the edge of the sheet, and a sheet 19 having the coloured band 14. To form the windsheld the sheets 15 and 19 are superposed and placed between the glass sheets 11, 12. The projecting end portions of the wires 16 are passed through aligned holes in a plastics strip 20 and a metal strip 21 at the edge of the windshield and are soldered to the outer face of the strip 21 at 22. The assembly is then bonded together by heat and pressure in an autoclave, tape 25 being used to hold the components in position during this process. After bonding a lead-in, wire is soldered to the strip 21. In a second embodiment a single sheet of material constitutes the interlayer, and in this case the wires 16 are attached to the face of the sheet opposite to that having the coloured band.
