Abstract

[Also in Division H5] A laminated window is made by bonding together a layer of a flexible material and at least one layer of plastics material to form a flexible stratified construction, and subsequently bonding two outer sheets of glass or transparent rigid plastics material to opposite sides of the stratified construction. The flexible material may be polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose acetate, cellulose butyrate or polytetrafluoroethylene. The flexible material layer may be tinted and the colour density may be non-uniform. This layer may also be light-polarizing. It may be coated with a thin transparent layer, e.g. of gold, for reflecting infra-red radiation. This coating may be arranged for carrying an electric current for heating, in which case electrical leads to the coating may comprise silver flakes in an organic carrier applied either to the flexible material layer or to the coating. The plastics material layer may be of polyvinyl butyral. Two plastics material layers may be applied to opposite sides of the coated or uncoated flexible material layer. Such a stratified construction may be pressed between rolls, at least one set of which may be formed with contoured surfaces to impart a textured surface to the stratified construction. Adhesives may be used between the various layers. An assembly of the stratified construction and the outer layers of glass or transparent rigid plastics material may be made into the final laminate under heat and pressure or the assembly may be either pressed or placed in a vacuum bag to remove entrapped air and then placed in an autoclave to complete lamination.
