Abstract

1432034 Laminated windscreens SIERRACIN CORP 7 Sept 1973 42334/73 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions H3-H5] In the manufacture of electrically-heatable windscreens an electrically conductive coating 27 is applied to a transparent plastics carrier film 26, an edge portion of the coating is removed, and the film is bonded to a transparent plastics layer 23. A transparent rigid outer layer 21, e.g. glass, polymethyl methacrylate, polycarbonate, is generally provided. The removal may be achieved by abrasion or by etching with HCl/HNO 3 around the entire periphery, the central area being masked if necessary; abrasion may further roughen the underlying carrier 26 and thus facilitate lamination. The interlayer 23 may be polyvinyl butyral and the carrier 26 and coating 27 may be vacuummetallized polyethylene terephthalate film. A further outer layer 22 and optionally an interlayer 24 are generally provided, although carrier 26 may form an outer layer. As shown, the assembly includes a copper foil bus-bar 11 which may be bonded to the coating 27 by a conductive adhesive or by heating and which becomes embedded in the interlayer 23 during lamination. In assembling the layers, the interlayers 23, 24 and the carrier 26 may be united to form a pre-laminate.
