Abstract
In a process for cooling gases formed in the pyrolysis and combustion of sulphuric acid and containing solid particles in suspension, the gases are conducted vertically ove heat exchange surfaces maintained at a temperature of above 250 DEG C. and in a path whereby the solid particles are deposited from the gas on to surfaces other than the heat exchange surfaces. The heat exchange surfaces preferably comprise an annular array of vertical steam generating or air-heating tubes. See Division F4. In one example the gas cooled by the process comprises the following composition by volume: 6.0% SO2 + SO3; 6.9% CO2; 28.1% H2O; 3.7% O2 and 55.3% N2. In another example the gas comprises by volume: 4.4% O2; 56.8% N2; 0.25% SO3; 7.25% SO2; 4.2% CO2; 21.1% H2O and 0.25 gram of ash per cubic metre.
