The discharge of coal from hopper 3 is controlled by pivoted gate 5 which is counterweighted at 10 and operated by foot pedal 9. The gate swings from a lower ineffective position through aperture 6 formed in the base 1 of shoot 2. Handle 11 is also provided for operating the gate. Additionally a gate 14 is provided which may be fixed by pin 15 to control the size of aperture 4 at the bottom of hopper 3. Coal dust passes through grill 12 and aperture 6 to be discharged down shoots 13 and 17.
