Abstract
Powdered Group IB-VIIB, IVA, VA or VIII metal or a compound thereof is produced by adding a reducing agent to a solution comprising a salt of the metal and a soluble aluminium compound, the reducing agent simultaneously reducing the metal salt to the lower valence state or to the metal and precipitating aluminium hydroxide. The reducing agent is one that generates either an acid or a base and may be formaldehyde, hydrazine, hydroxylamine, methanol, acetaldehyde, hydroquinone, isopropanol, formic acid and diborane. Preferred aluminium compounds are the alkali metal aluminates. The aluminium hydroxide by-product may be removed from the precipitate by treatment with an acid or base. Alternatively, after the addition of aluminate the solution is titrated with acid until aluminium hydroxide starts to percipitate so that acid formed in the reduction step causes further precipitation of the aluminium hydroxide. The metal-aluminium hydroxide co-precipitate is dried, calcined and formed into electrodes. The production of powdered Pt., Pd and Pt-Ru is specifically referred to.
