Abstract

Cyclohexanone is produced by the selective hydrogenation of phenol in the vapour phase and in the presence of a palladium-containing catalyst, the reaction being carried out at a temperature in the range 100-200 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising from 0.3 to 5% by weight of palladium on g -aluminium oxide and from 2 to 60% of an alkaline earth hydroxide. The preferred alkaline earth hydroxide is calcium hydroxide and the preferred temperature range is 120-170 DEG C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 890,095.ALSO:A catalyst for use in the hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone comprises from 0.3 to 5% by weight of palladium or g -aluminium oxide. The catalyst also comprising from 2 to 60% by weight of an alkaline earth hydroxide, preferably calcium hydroxide. The catalyst may be produced by shaping together g -Al2O3 and an alkaline earth oxide, impregnating the shaped bodies with an aqueous solution of palladium chloride or palladium nitrate and subsequently reducing with hydrogen. The catalyst may be regenerated by passing nitrogen and/or air over it at a temperature in the range 140-250 DEG C followed by reduction with hydrogen at a temperature within the same range. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 890,095.
