Abstract

Benzoic acid is hydrogenated to hexahydrobenzoic acid in the presence of a catalyst made by adding at least an equimolar amount of alkaline hydroxide to an aqueous suspension of carbon in a palladium salt solution to precipitate Pd(OH)2, and reducing the hydroxide to metal. Examples are given in which the hydrogenation temperature is about 130-135 DEG C. and the pressure is 100-150 atmospheres.ALSO:Hydrogenation catalysts are made by adding an at least equimolar amount of alkaline hydrooxide to an aqueous suspension of carbon in a palladium salt solution to precipitate Pd(OH)2 and reducing the hydroxide to metal. Preferred Pd salt is PdCl2. Reduction may be effected by H.CHO or hydrogen.
