Abstract
1,097,090. Metal-vapour lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Dec. 31, 1965 [Dec. 31, 1964], No. 55498/65. Heading H1D. In a low pressure mercury lamp which includes an amalgam for pressure regulation, the amalgamating metal is enclosed in a foraminated container, the foraminations being of from 5 to 30 microns in diameter, such that the solid or liquid metal is retained within the container but mercury vapour can pass therefrom. A pellet of indium 9, Fig. 3, is held within a folded and welded sheet of stainless steel mesh 8 secured by cement 11 to the envelope of a fluorescent mercury vapour lamp. In other embodiments, the indium may be held in a cylindrical container (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown) mounted by a clip on a lead wire from which it is insulated by a ceramic ring; or the container may be attached to a C-shaped spring (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) which is biased outwardly against the envelope, thereby permitting the placing of the container at any desired position along the envelope. The container may alternatively be of glass fibre.
