Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A fluid filter comprises a flat casing formed from a lower body part 65 and a cover 67, a fluid inlet 72, a fluid outlet 66, and at least two fibrous filter elements 61, 62, 63, the edges of which are provided with rims interengaging with rims of adjacent elements as shown at 79, 76, 80, 77, and the outer edges of the interengaged elements are clamped at 71 between the body and the cover of the casing. To form an individual filter element, the edge of a fibrous sheet of vinyl chloride-acrylonitrile copolymer (see Specifications 1,027,333 and 1,027,335) may be compacted by a heated press. The fibrous sheet may comprise two outer layers of the copolymer and an inner layer of cotton linters or cellulose acetate fibres which will retain a film of oil. Filaments or strands may be provided in the filter material, as described in Specification 1,084,282. A rim is formed on the edge of the element by injection of a synthetic plastic into an annular space between the base and the press member. These rims may be of various shapes, Figures 6 and 8 - 14 (not shown), so as to engage with the rims of adjacent filter elements. The filter is suitable as an air filter for an internal combustion engine.
