Abstract

Solutions of a thermosettable precondensate obtained by condensing iso-butyraldehyde and formaldehyde, at least 5 mol % being the former, with at least a molar equivalent of a phenol are used as binders for friction element compositions comprising asbestos fibre and friction-imparting material. The composition may also contain a filler and hexamine. Specified friction-imparting materials and abrasives (which are not distinguished) are brass chips, metal shavings and filings, silica, talc, wood flour, chalk, clay, mica, fibreglass, felt, carbon black, graphite, metal nitrides and oxides, and polymerized ground cashew nut shell oil. Numerous phenols which may be used (including rather uncommon compounds) are mentioned generally but only phenol itself or p-t-octyl phenol is used in specific examples. The resin may be modified with a terpene or an oil and may be dissolved in toluene. In the Examples the compositions are formed into brake-linings.
