[Also in Divisions C3, D1 and D2] A friction clutch disc for an oil immersed multi-plate clutch comprises a metal or resin impregnated asbestos support plate having friction linings bonded thereto and the friction linings are formed of 40-90 parts by weight of organic fibre, 10-60 parts by weight of activated carbon and phenol resins equivalent to 10-50% of the total quantity of fibre and carbon. The friction linings have a stable coefficient of friction under varying temperature pressure and relative velocity conditions. A higher coefficient of friction may be obtained by adding small quantities of colloidal silica. The friction linings are made by mixing cotton, hemp, or synthetic fibre with activated carbon and adding small quantities of an adhering agent e.g. aluminium sulphate, a binding agent e.g. polyethylene oxide and an accelerant e.g. rosin. The mixture is then made into a sheet by a paper machine and the sheets impregnated with phenol resins. Figs. 4-6 (not shown) are graphs showing the coefficient of friction against velocity, temperature and pressure.
