Energy-absorbing elements. - Friction bodies for clutches and brakes are made by working finely-divided gray cast-iron into loose or woven asbestos or other fibrous material, impregnated with a phenolic formaldehyde resin (such as " Bakelite " varnish) or other binder, during the process of manufacture. For example, 1.8 kg. of gray cast-iron filings or turnings, stirred up with dilute "Bakelite" varnish, are added to 1 kg. of fibre impregnated in a mixing-machine with 1.3 kg. of " Bakelite " varnish diluted with 10 per cent of spirit. The mixture is spread to dry out the spirit, the mass is disintegrated and cold pressed to about 300 atmospheres, and the blocks. or a plurality of superposed blocks, are hot pressed to size and hardened under pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a,), comprises also the use of other finely-divided metals, such as aluminium turnings. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
