1,096,738. Electric motor driving arrangements. AUSTIN CROMPTON PARKINSON ELECTRIC VEHICLES Ltd. Oct. 17, 1966 [Dec. 3, 1965], No. 51324/65. Heading H2A. [Also in Division B7] A motorized vehicle-wheel, e.g. for a battery electric vehicle, has a wheel 1 fixedly mounted on an electric traction motor frame 2 fitted with conventional polepieces and field windings 13, such frame and its associated armature 3 commutator 8 and brush gear 9 being mounted in bearings 4, 5 on an axle 6 that is either fixed to or lockable with a suspension assembly 7 carried by the vehicle underframe, and the armature drives the sun gear 10 of an epicyclic reduction gearing whose compound planet gears 11 are carried by the motor frame 2 and co-operate with a gear 12 that at least when driving is stationary relative to the vehicle. In the embodiment shown, the motor frame 2 carries a drum 16 or disc engageable by a brake mechanism 17, and the direction of wheel rotation is determined by selection of the polarity of either the field or armature connections. In the other embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the axle (20) and its gear (26) are both separate, and rotatable, and lockable by clutches (23), (28) to the assembly (22); when both clutches are disengaged the motor may start off-load, engagement of one or the other clutches effects wheel drive in a desired direction, and engagement of both brakes the wheel.
