Abstract

Compounds of formula <FORM:1096523/C2/1> in which R represents an aliphatic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon (4-20 C) group, n is 0, 1 or 2 and in which at least 4 but not more than 8 of the substituents R1 to R10 represent H, the remainder being chosen from the groups -CH2OH and <FORM:1096523/C2/2> where Z represents hydrogen, alkyl group (1-6 C), an alkali metal atom, an alkaline-earth metal atom, an ammonium group or a group derived from an organic amine are used in cosmetic compositions (see Division A5). Organic amines may be propylamine, butylamine and triethanolamine. Examples describe the preparation of tridecane-1,3,3-tricarboxylic acid through the ethyl ester of lauric acid, the diethyl ester of malonic acid, the 3,3-diethyl-1-methyl ester and the sodium salt of the triacid; the pentadecane-, heptadecane-, and the nonadecane-1, 3,3-tricarboxylic acids from myristic, palmitic, and stearic acids respectively; the tridecane to nonadecane-1,3,3-tricarboxylic acid mixtures from a -olefines; dodecane-1,1,2-tricarboxylic acid and its salts; tri-decane-1,2- and -1,3-dicarboxylic acids; tridecane-1, 2,3-tricarboxylic acid; a mixture of tridecane1,2,3,3-tetracarboxylic acid and tridecane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid; tridecane-1,3,4-tricarboxylic acid; tetradecane - 1,3,3,4 - tetracarboxylic acid; 1,2,3,3,4 - tridecanepentacarboxylic acid pentaethyl ester; 1,2,3,4,4,5-tridecanehexacarboxylic acid hexaethyl ester; the monoester of heptadecane-1,3,3-tricarboxylic acid; dimethylol - 4,4 - tetradecanol - 1; esters of methylol carboxylic acid; trihydroxymethylene-3,4,4-tetradecanol - 1; dimethylol - 2,3 - tetradecanol - 1; trimethylol - 3,3,4 - tetradecanol-1; 2,3,4,4 - tetramethylol - tetradecanol - 1 and 2,3,4,4,5-pentamethylol-tetradecanol-1.ALSO:Cosmetic compositions contain a compound of formula <FORM:1096523/A5-A6/1> in which R represents an aliphatic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon (4-20C) and n is 0, 1, or 2 and in which at least 4 but not more than 8 of R1 to R10 represent H, the remainder being -CH2OH and <FORM:1096523/A5-A6/2> where Z represents hydrogen, an alkyl (1-6C) group, an alkali metal atom, an alkaline earth metal atom, an ammonium group, or a group derived from an organic amine. Shaving preparations, shampoos, skin lotions, cleansing preparations, lipsticks hair and hand lotions, hair lacquers, suntan lotions, soap together with the cosmetic ingredient of dish-washing preparations are mentioned and examples describe the use of the monosodium salt of tridecane-1,3,3-tricarboxylic acid in a bactericidal soap and shaving cream; hexadecene-1,3,3-tricarboxylic acid and tridecane-1,3,3-tricarboxylic acid in shampoos; the monosodium salt of the tricarboxylic acid from C11-C15 a -olefines in a mild dish-washing liquid; hexadecane-1,3,3-tricarboxylic acid mono-ammonium salt monoethyl ester in a shampoo; lauryl-1,3,3-trialcohol in hand lotion and shampoo; dimethylol-2,3-tridecanol-1 in a hair lotion; tetramethylol-3,4,5,5-pentadecanol-1 in a hair lacquer; trimethylol-4,4,5-pentadecanol-1 in a sun-tan lotion and pentamethylol-3,4,5,5,6-hexadecanol-1 in a hand cream.
