Abstract

1,096,254. Container sealing apparatus. EX-CELL-O CORPORATION. May 3, 1966, No.19430/66. Heading B8C. A thermoplastic coated container, Fig. 15 is closed by blowing hot air on to the inner surfaces of closure panels 34, 44 and on to the outer surfaces of panels 28, 29 and 38, 39 to soften the thermoplastic for subsequent pressure closing. As described, a heater head (47) (Fig. 2, not shown), connected through a housing (45) to a hot air manifold (60), is cammed downwards by an actuator arm (89) into the mouth of the container to cause hot air to be blown through ports 124 and 125 (Fig. 5) on to the inner panel areas 34 and 44 of the container and through ports 130 and 131 on to the outer side gusset panel areas 28, 29 and 38, 39. The hot air ports may alternatively be replaced by slots (149) (Fig. 10, not shown). After heating, the container is passed beneath a heater head (50) (Fig. 3, not shown), which blows hot air through ports (144) and (145) (Fig. 11, not shown) on to the container in order to maintain the temperature whilst the top closure panels 34 and 44 are sealed to each other by sealing jaws (146). The heater heads may be pivoted in and out of the container whilst it is continuously or intermittently moving on a conveyer of a packaging machine. If the machine is stopped, the heater head is moved upwards by the downward movement of a cylinder rod (104) (Fig. 2, not shown) in order to prevent over heating of the container.
