1410215 Sheet forming; blow moulding PLASTIC FORMING CO Inc 21 Nov 1972 [22 Nov 1971] 53729/72 Heading B5A Hollow thermoplastics articles are formed by placing a first heated sheet between a first mould part and a first face of an intermediate mould plate, placing a second heated sheet between a second mould part and a second face of the intermediate mould plate, closing the mould parts on to the mould plate member and conforming the sheets to their respective mould parts by a fluid pressure differential, opening the mould parts to disengage them from the mould plate and closing the mould parts together to join the formed sheets together. As shown in Fig. 1, sheets 1, 2 are placed, e.g. from an extruder, between a male mould part 3, plate member 5 and a female mould part 4. Male mould part 3 has a face 6 recessed at 8 to provide a rib 9 on the article in co-operation with projection 12 on plate 5, female mould part 4 having a cavity 7 with corners 10 facing face 11 of plate 5. Mould edges 13, 14 close on to parts 15 of plate 5 which are either heated or thermally insulated to retain these portions of the sheets at welding temperature. Air is blown through ducts (23, 24, Fig. 5, not shown) in plate 5 to effect forming, and if desired, vacuum may be applied via ducts (25). Adjustable spring- loaded clamping frames (17, 20) may be provided on members 3, 5 for clamping the sheets, which may be of different plastics, different thicknesses or different colours. A fixed needle (76) on part (3<SP>1</SP>) may also be used for blowmoulding and which forcibly punctures sheet (11) by means of collar (77) on plate (5<SP>1</SP>). An insert (28) may be loosely supported on plate (5<SP>1</SP>) for incorporation between the two sheets. In a preferred embodiment, Fig. 7, mould parts 3, 4 and plate 5 are mounted on carrier frame 30 for movement on rails 32 by cylinder 33. Mould part 4 is pinned to rods 37<SP>1</SP>, 39, 39<SP>1</SP> for movement therewith and mould part 3 is slidable on rods 37<SP>1</SP>, 39, 39<SP>1</SP> being opened and closed by cylinder 56 through toggle linkages 60, 61 fixed respectively to platen 68 which is pinned to rods 37<SP>1</SP>, 39, 39<SP>1</SP> and sliding platen 54 carrying mould part 3. Rod 39<SP>1</SP> is interrupted to allow swinging of plate 5 about rod 37<SP>1</SP> by cylinder (43, Fig. 8, not shown). An alternately interposable lost-motion mechanism (72, Figs. 13, 14, not shown) allows mould parts 3, 4 to close first against plate 5 and then against each other.
