Abstract
1,094,784. Eddy current couplings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 19, 1966 [Sept. 23, 1965], No. 40617/65. Heading H2A. An eddy current coupling has an external eddy current drum member with conductive end rings which are formed to provide an outward springing action to urge them into electrical contact with the drum at the axial ends of the magnetic field. A rotatable ferromagnetic drum 11 has annular grooves 19 in which copper rings 18, which may be constructed as a split ring, Fig. 4 (not shown), or as two half rings with springs between the two halves, Fig. 5 (not shown), are secured by spring action. Mounted within drum 11 is rotatable magnetic field producing member 13 having poles 16 which produce eddy currents 20, closing through rings 18, in the drum. Good electrical contact between the drum and the rings is ensured by the spring action of the rings aided by centrifugal force.
