Abstract
1,094,646. Magnetic separators. J. & F. POOL Ltd. July 27, 1964 [Aug. 6, 1963], No. 31015/63. Heading B2J. A magnetic separator comprises a container 14 for feeding slurry containing magnetic and non-magnetic particles on to rotatable polepieces 18, 19 which carry the slurry past a magnetic field, means for washing the magnetic particles attracted to the pole-pieces during passage through the magnetic field and means for washing the magnetic particles off the pole-pieces when they have passed out of the magnetic field. As shown, the slurry is agitated by a motor-driven impeller 31 as it is fed via three circumferentially spaced apertures 35 and motor-driven rotary-vane feeders 35A into the space between two conical plates 18, 19 forming the pole-pieces. The pole-pieces are made of chromium-plated brass and are revolved on a track 21 to pass through three pairs of electromagnets 24A, 28 by a worm-shaft 15. Water from a tank 30 is sprayed through jets (36), Fig. 2 (not shown), between the plates 18, 19 from above in the region of the magnets so as to both assist the passage of non-magnetic particles into the sections (39) of a gully 38 and wash the adhering magnetic particles. Water is also sprayed through jets (37) between the plates at those parts moving out of the influence of the magnets so as to wash the magnetic particles into the sections (40) of the gully. During passage of slurry through the magnets, the polarity of the magnets is reversed so that the magnetic particles carried on the inside surfaces of the plates 18, 19 are turned over during this movement thereby freeing trapped non-magnetic particles. If desired, permanent magnets may be employed instead.
