Abstract

Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1094461/C2/1> wherein Y is a condensed polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon radical, in which one or more nuclei may be saturated and which may be mono- or poly-substituted by halogen atoms or alkyl or alkoxy groups or by a group <FORM:1094461/C2/2> in which Alk is a C1- 6 alkylene group and R10 and R11 are each hydrogen or alkyl or with the N-atom form a heterocyclic ring, R4 is H, CH3 or C2H5,R5 is H or CH3, R6 is H or OH, R7 and R8 are each H or Cl and R9 is H or CH3 are made by reacting a compound of the formula R4.CH2.CO.Y with formaldehyde or a substance yielding formaldehyde and the appropriate phenylethylamine. The compounds may also be prepared by reacting the appropriate phenylethylamine with a halide of the formula Y.CO.CH(R4).CH2.Halogen; reacting an organometallic compound Y.Me, where Me represents Li, Na, K or MgHal with an N-phenethyl b -aminopropionic halide; reacting the Grignard compound of the formula Y-MgHal with an N - phenethyl - b - aminopropionitrile, or reacting an amine of the formula Y.CO.CHR4.CH2.NH2 with a methyl phenethyl ketone or a phenyl acetaldehyde, and a reducing agent. Preferably, Y is a naphthyl, tetrahydronaphthyl, fluorenyl anthracyl or phenanthryl radical. Products containing optically active carbon atoms may be revolved into their optically active isomers, if desired.
