A procedure for preparing a compound of formula I **(See formula)** where R is hydrogen and Alk is an organic radical selected from those of formulas A, B and C **(See formula)** C: **(See formula)** wherein R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11 are hydrogen or lower alcohol containing 1 to 7 carbon atoms, said organic radicals being attached to nitrogen by the carbon atom which supports and its acid addition salts, which comprises treating 10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo [a, d] cycloheptene-5-carboxaldehyde with an aminoester, of formula NH2-Alk-COOR17 in which Alk is as has been defined above and R is alcohol containing 1 to 7 carbon atoms, to obtain the corresponding cyclic amide of formula VI. **(See formula)** where Alk is as defined above; treating said last-mentioned compound with a condensation agent, under the conditions of the Bischler-Napieralski reaction, to obtain the corresponding quaternary salt, of formula IV **(See formula)** where Alk is as defined above and X is the nucleophilic residue derived from said condensing agent; treating said last quoted quaternary salt with a reducing agent, to obtain the corresponding compound of formula I in which R1 and Alk are as previously defined; and isolating said last mentioned compound of formula I.
