Abstract

In apparatus for producing a fine-grained material by freeze-drying, the material in frozen and granular form is introduced through an air lock 2 into an evacuated chamber 4 housing a rotating insert 5 comprising a scraper in the form of lifting buckets 6 and bumper members 7 formed from ribbed heating pipes so that the granules strike and rub against each other and the parts of the apparatus to remove succesively the dry layer successively formed on the pieces. The fine-grained dry pieces are thereafter removed through a vapour outlet conduit 8 connected to a vacuum source of sufficient size to the chamber while the non-dried pieces remain. A cyclone separator 9 is connected to the conduit. In a further arrangement attenuate bumper members may not be heated so that the material alternately hits an unheated and a heated member. The drying may also be carried out in two steps wherein the second step takes place at a higher pressure than in the first step.
