Abstract
Aqueous pasty emulsions contain elastomers, hydrophilic earth gels and anionic or cationic emulsifiers. The elastomer may be natural rubber, butyl rubber, halogenated butyl rubber, a chloroprene polymer, a copolymer of one or more mono-olefins with an endocyclic hydrocarbon or with hydrocarbons containing a bridge formed by one or more methylene groups e.g. norbornene, dicyclopentadiene or 5-methylene norbornene, or polyisobutylene. Bentonite is the specified gel in the examples while other montmorillonites, attapulgites and clays generally having a plasticity index above 25 are listed. Emulsifiers specified are alkali metal salts of aliphatic or other acids, and salts of a mineral or organic acid and a phosphine or an organic nitrogen base. There may also be present mineral filling materials e.g. mineral or organic pigments which the elastomer may be vulcanized. Further additives are hydrocarbon resins, as binders and bituminous materials in amount from 50 to 150 parts per 100 elastomer.ALSO:Sand is coated in the cold state by an aqueous pasty emulsion containing an elastomer, hydrophilic earth gel and an anionic or cationic emulsifier. The elastomer may be natural or synthetic rubber, while bentonite is the specified gel. Pigments, organic colouring matter, hydrocarbon resins and bitumens may also be present.ALSO:Surfaces, e.g. wood, cement, metal, concrete, calcareous or siliceous granulates, plaster, bricks, cardboard and cellulose materials may be coated with pigmented aqueous pasty emulsions containing elastomers, hydrophilic earth gels and anionic or cationic emulsifiers. The elastomers may be natural rubber, butyl rubber (halogenated ornot), chloroprene polymers, or more olefin copolymers while bentonite is the preferred gel. The emulsions may be mixed with pasty emulsions of hydrocarbon finishing agents such as bitumen and resins. The pigmented emulsions may also be used for marking roadways.
