Abstract
An oil in water emulsion, suitable for incorporation in cement type concretes and gypsum plasters to render them waterproof, comprises 50-70 per cent of a water-insoluble high molecular weight thermoplastic organic material, dispersed in 30-50 per cent of water which contains 0.25-2 per cent of a high molecular weight alkali metal salt of pure lignin obtained from waste sulphate liquor, preferably according to U.S.A. Specification 2,464,828, the emulsion having a pH of 4 to 7.5. Optionally a conventional emulsifier such as 0.1 to 0.5 per cent of saponified oleic acid, Swedish rosin oil or pine wood resin may be added. The disperse phase preferably comprises petroleum, natural asphalts or paraffin wax but coal tar, stearine pitch, ester gum, thermoplastic synthetic resins, or natural or synthetic rubber latices may be used. The alkali metal salt of the lignin may be formed in situ such as by adding the molten asphalt to a hot aqueous alkali solution containing lignin, the pH of the emulsion being subsequently lowered to 9-10 by the addition of boric, oxalic or acetic acid, and further lowered to 4-7.5 by means of hydrochloric, phosphoric or sulphuric acids.
