Abstract

Compositions consist of polyvinyl chloride, a plasticizer (dioctyl phthallate), a stabilizer (barium-cadmium salt), stearic acid and titanium dioxide pigment characterized in that the pigment particles are treated with hydrous zinc oxide and/or hydrous magnesium oxide alone or in combination with hydrous oxides of aluminium and/or titanium to form a coating on the pigment and subsequently coated with an epoxide (see Division C1).ALSO:A titanium dioxide pigment is treated with hydrous zinc oxide and/or hydrous magnesium oxide alone or in combination with hydrous oxides of aluminium and/or titanium to form a coating on the pigment, the hydrous zinc oxide being applied before and/or after calcination of the pigment and the hydrous oxides of magnesium, aluminium and titanium being applied after calcination, and the pigment is subsequently treated with an epoxide by the process of Specification 1,018,880. The total amount of hydrous oxide used is such as to provide an amount of at least 0.25% by weight of the finished pigment calculated as the oxide and there may be present in the finished pigment 0.25 to 2.0% of aluminium oxide 0.25 to 60% of titanium oxide, 0.25 to 1.0% of magnesium oxide and at least 0.25% of zinc oxide. The epoxide is in amount of at least 0.25% by weight of the finished pigment and may be applied by dissolving it in a solvent, e.g. acetone, and forming a slurry with the pigment or by spraying the epoxide solution on to the pigment after which the pigment is dried and dry milled as for example, in a fluid energy mill. The epoxides are epoxidized glyoxides and alkylesters derived from fatty acids having a chain length of 1-18 carbon atoms esterified with alcohols of chain length of from 1-10 carbon atoms. These epoxides have oxirane oxygen in the range from 2-9% by weight and iodine numbers of from 1-45.
